In the dimly lit room of the women's hospital, you could hear the nervous flutter of heartbeats as the person lay curled up on the bed, their eyes scanning the room in search of something - anything - to distract them from the impending colonoscopy prep. It was clear that they were terrified, not just about what was to come but also about their health and the potential embarrassment of having to go through such an intimate procedure.
As you stepped into the room, your personal nurse persona took over. You tried your best to hide the excitement bubbling up inside you at the prospect of witnessing such a realistic colonoscopy prep. You knew Cassie well from high school, which did make you feel a little more comfortable being in her presence at this vulnerable time. Still, you couldn't help but feel the tension between you as you approached the bed.
"Hi Cassie," you said softly, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand. "It's going to be okay. You're not alone."
Cassie didn't look up, her eyes remaining fixed on the floor as she slowly nodded her head in response. You could see the tears glistening in her eyes, and you knew that she was trying incredibly hard to hold herself together.
"Let's start with undressing," you suggested, using your steady voice to try and calm her nerves. "It's going to be much easier if we just go through everything step-by-step together."
Slowly, Cassie began to unbutton her shirt, revealing the thin hospital gown she was wearing underneath. Her hands were shaking so badly that it was hard for her to even manage the simplest of tasks. You could see the fear etched into every inch of her body, radiating off of her in waves.
Gently, you placed your own hands over hers, guiding them until they were free from the shirt straps. Then, you moved on to the next step, helping Cassie slide out of the hospital gown until she was completely naked beneath the thin sheet covering her body.
You took a deep breath, steeling yourself for what was to come. Cassie was still trembling, huddled on the bed like a scared child. You reached out, placing your hand against her back and gently rubbing circular motions, hoping to soothe her.
"Let's get this over with," you said, trying your best to sound reassuring. "We'll get through this together. Just focus on taking deep breaths, okay?"
Together, you helped Cassie stand up and made your way to the bathroom. Inside, you watched as she struggled to urinate, her hands shook so much that she couldn't even steady herself on the toilet seat. You quickly stepped in, taking charge of the situation and guiding her through the process.
Next, you moved onto the stool sample collection. Cassie was humiliated, her face feeling beet red as she hovered over the toilet. You knew this wasn't easy for her, but you tried your best to make it as quick and painless as possible. Once she was finished, you carefully placed the sample container on a nearby tray and wheeled it out of the bathroom.
As you moved back into the main room, Cassie was still curled up on the bed, her eyes closed and breathing heavily. You could tell that she was doing her best to fight through the emotional turmoil she was experiencing.
"Do you want me to help you remove your tampon?" you asked gently, trying not to make it sound too much like an invasion of privacy.
Cassie nodded, her voice barely audible. You moved closer, reaching out to touch her softly. Together, you guided her through the process of removing the tampon, both of you feeling the awkwardness and embarrassment of the situation.
Once it was out, you set it aside and moved on to the next part of the procedure. You handed Cassie a plastic container and explained that she would need to collect her watery pee in it throughout the process. You could see the horror on her face as she realized what this meant, but you insisted that it was necessary for the doctors to properly assess her condition.
Together, the two of you sat on the bed, watching as the clock ticked away. The laxatives were starting to take effect, and Cassie could feel her stomach churning uncomfortably. She was grateful for the hand that gripped hers tightly, grounding her in the moment and providing a much-needed sense of comfort.
As they waited for the next stage of the colonoscopy prep, both of them felt incredibly vulnerable and exposed. But somehow, through the shared experience and mutual trust, they found solace in each other's company.
